When we speak about this app, 23andMe isn’t a particularly useful app on its own. Rather, it’s a companion to the 23andMe DNA testing service, which requires you to send a saliva sample to receive a genetic health report and/or ancestry details – as well as the ability to find relatives who have also taken the test.

The app essentially contains everything that can be found on the 23andMe website, but it’s a slick and efficacious way to access all of these insights on your phone.

You can see your ancestry composition (how much of your DNA corresponds to which regions) as well as a timeline estimating how many generations ago your most recent ancestor was for each region. Meanwhile, there are various reports on whether you are predisposed to certain conditions and on traits you may have based on your genetics.

And that’s only scratching the surface; there’s a lot more here, all beautifully presented with graphics, graphs, and text. New reports are added over time as well, so you don’t have to retest, and if you want to go deep, there’s even a 23andMe Plus subscription that unlocks a slew of extra reports. Even without that, it’s a fantastic app, and if you’ve taken the 23andMe test, it’s a must-have.

Both Services necessitate the purchase of a kit and the submission of a saliva sample using the collection kit provided. You can check the status of your sample by logging into your account. When you have received your results, open your app to view all of your reports. You can also choose to participate in 23andMe research and answer survey questions in the app.
